Meet Milky Edwards & the Chamberlings, the 70’s soul group that grabbed headlines in 2012 when three needledrop videos hit YouTube, playing tracks from David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. These are powerful, infectious versions of the tunes, but it turns out the band never was, and the videos are an elaborate hoax. It’s the cover art that gave them away – as The Guardian reported, the titles are a modern typeface, and not handlettered, as would have been the case. Nevertheless, the recordings met with the approval of Mr. Bowie himself, who issued a congratulatory post on Facebook. The Internet is home to many mysteries. We can only hope that someday Milky Edwards will reveal himself–or, better yet, release additional tracks from the album.
